The Ugnayan ng Pahinungòd UP Open University (UPOU) conducted its third face-to-face session for the Teacher Training on Reading Remediation program on 28 February 2020 at the Centennial Center for Digital Learning (CCDL) Auditorium, UPOU Headquarters, Los Baños, Laguna.
The topics covered during this session included “Factors affecting Reading Comprehension” and “Oral Reading Techniques.” Prior to this training, the Ugnayan ng Pahinungòd UPOU has facilitated two face-to-face lectures on 28 October and 19 November 2019, highlighting the topics on reading difficulties, structured language approach, individualized education program, conduct of informal assessment in the classroom, techniques of teaching letters, and use of flash cards in reading activities.
Ms. Fides Minella Lladoc-Mendoza, a Reading Intervention Specialist and a former Gurong Pahinungòd volunteer, continued to serve as the resource speaker for the training. It was participated in by 38 Kinder to Grade 3 teachers from Bay and Los Baños, Laguna. Eleven teachers from Cebu and Davao also joined the event through video conferencing.
After the lecture, the participants were able to apply their learnings and evaluate their skills in reading comprehension and oral reading by facilitating a mock reading session. Ms. Mendoza gave various tips and suggestions to further help the participants on the topic.
The Teacher Training on Reading Remediation is one of the activities of the recently established Ugnayan ng Pahinungòd UPOU under the Teacher Development Program (TDP) which aims to develop public school and higher education teachers’ competencies in the 3Rs (reading, writing and arithmetic) and enrich academic preparation for higher education targeted at public school children, street children and out-of-school youth.
